How Do I Install It?

Fill out the brief download form and you will be emailed a link to download the install. Once you've received the email and downloaded the file, launch it. The installation should be self-explanatory as long as you don't run into any of the errors listed in the troubleshooting section.

If you already have it installed and you're looking for a newer version, do that from within the MileTracker application under the Help menu.

Installation/Initial Launch Troubleshooting

Error: Component 'MileTrackerCore.dll' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

This used to be a trivial problem to fix but due to a legal battle between Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, it has become more complicated. Details can be found in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article titled "Availability of Current Build of Microsoft VM", but here is a simplied version. You are doing this at your own risk. Please read the Knowledge Base article above, especially if you're running Windows 2000. Here is a simplied version depending on the version of Windows that you're using:

Error: DllRegisterServer in MileTrackerCore.dll failed

See the solution above.

Error: Component 'msjava.dll' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

See the solution above.

Error: A required .DLL, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found

You will have to install the Visual Basic 6.0 run-time files (~1 MB) from Microsoft. Download and install them and then relaunch MileTracker.

How Do I Use It?

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Very limited, but I'll add more as time allows.

How do I backup my data?

You can backup your data in 2 ways. The first is to simply use the "Backup Users, Accounts, & Settings" menu item under the Backup menu. Note that this will not backup the histories of your balances. Until I have the opportunity to add that functionality, I suggest the following steps for backing up your data:

  1. Make sure that MileTracker is not running.
  2. Copy the MileTracker.settings and MileTracker.history file from MileTracker's directory (?) to another folder on your computer.
  3. You can rename the files if you'd like to, such as adding the date of the backup.

How do I restore my data that I backed up?

There is currently nothing in MileTracker that automates this process, but it's very easy to do using the following steps:

  1. Make sure that MileTracker is not running.
  2. If there is already a MileTracker.settings file in your MileTracker directory (?), rename it. You can also delete it, but I recommend against that until you make sure that you've successfully restored your data.
  3. Locate your backup file and copy it into your MileTracker directory.
  4. Rename the backup file that you copied to MileTracker.settings.
  5. If you also backed up your MileTracker.history file, repeat steps 2-4 substituting MileTracker.history for MileTracker.settings.
  6. Launch MileTracker.

Where is my MileTracker directory?

For most users, it will be C:\Program Files\MileTracker. If not, you can use the "System Information" menu item under the About menu and look at the line that starts with "Directory:".

What data does MileTracker store on my computer?

MileTracker stores all of its data in 2 simple text files in its directory (?). One file is MileTracker.settings which stores your login and balance information along with options that you've configured. All of the passwords in that file are strongly encrypted. The other file is MileTracker.history which stores a list of your past balances and the time that they changed for each program. Modifying either of these files by hand may cause MileTracker to start functioning erratically or to even stop functioning at all.
